Regional Play

Last night our Varsity squad took the court against Northwestern. In game one we came out and played right with Northwestern. We blocked their hits, received their serves, and dug all balls. We had a few serving errors that put us a little behind, but worked together to come back. Even with our fight back we ended up losing game one 18-25. We were very pumped up after this, but did not come out as strong in game two. A long serve receive in Northwestern's favor put us a behind. Although we tried hard to make a comeback, we could not. We lost game two 6-25. In game three we made a few adjustments, but still could not get ahead of Northwestern. We lost game three 6-25. Losing is always hard, especially when it is the last game of the season. We again want to say thank you to Meagan VanderHeyden our varsity senior for all her leadership and hard work this season and all the seasons before that, that she dedicated to volleyball. We are going to miss her and wish her the best in every future endeavor. To our girls we say thank you for practicing hard, growing, and asking questions. We now have nine months of off-season workouts to get ready for next year's volleyball season. We look forward to watching many of our girls play basketball, hockey, soccer, softball, and run track. Thank you to our community, parents, and fans  that have come out to our games and events to cheer us on. Spooner Volleyball wouldn't be what it is without you. Keep coming to events and keep cheering loud. Go Rails! A final thank you to our coaches who plan every practice and work with our girls every night. Coach Eric Conner, Coach Staci Sikora, Coach Kayleigh Lutz, Coach Shanon Huffer, and Coach Kristina Berget you have done an amazing job this season and we thank you for your time spent with each player. We appreciate you!

Varsity Quad, Thursday, October 15th

On Thursday, October 15th we hosted our conference quad. We learned many quick lessons this night and many players stepped up to help out each game. I was very impressed at how the players on and off the court kept an upbeat spirit and voice even during losses. Even though we did not win any matches, We were impressed at some big rallies back. We lost the match to Hayward 12-25 and 9-25, the match to Cumberland 16-25 and close game, 21-25, and the match to Northwestern 14-25 and 16-25. We will head to Northwestern on Tuesday, October 20th for the 1st round of regions. The winner of 1st round will play on Thursday, for the 2nd round of regionals.

Varsity Conference Tournament

On Saturday Spooner Varsity traveled to Chetek for the Conference Tournament. Conference Tournament Saturday is always hard because you play four matches at 2-3 games each which is extremely tiring. Being a young team we are still getting used to each other on the court and communication is an area we have been growing in all year. We are proud of many of the girls who stepped up and played hard games. While we did not come out with a match win, we did see many great things out of our players. We had many moments where the girls rallied to gain back 6 or 7 points. This is a hard task. We have three practices before the 2nd half of our Conference Tournament and we will be working hard on skills and communication. Match scores were: against Barron, 7-25 and 14-25, against Bloomer, 10-25 and 15-25, against Chetek, 13-25 and 13-25, and against Ladysmith, 17-25 and, in a nail biting game, 25-27.

Varsity hosts the 2nd half of the Conference Tournament on Thursday, October 17th starting at 5:45. We will play Hayward, Cumberland, and Northwestern. We would love to have huge crowds out for this night.

We will also head to Northwestern on Tuesday, October 20th for the first round of regionals. Northwestern is seeded #2. Match play begins at 7:00 pm.

Upcoming Events

Pink Night Hayward

On Tuesday we played Hayward in our pink night. We collaborated with Hayward to use our pink jerseys and pink socks. We were very excited for this night and were glad to be able to support the cure for breast cancer. Although our games did not all turn out has we had hoped they would, we do continue to work on improvements and try new approaches. Cteam scores were 11-25, 25-27, and 14-25.  JV scores were 14-25, 21-25, and 17-15.

Varsity continues to fit into our groove. I am proud of the leaders on our team and the young players that have stepped up on our varsity squad. While we lost our games 13-25, 11-25, and 15-25 to lose match, we will only grow from here. We were able to honor our two seniors this night also. We thank Meagan VanderHeyden for her passion for volleyball and her continual willingness to learn and adapt. We also thank Mari Hordvik, a new to SASD foreign exchange student, for her joy and willingness to grow and learn. Varsity will take the court on Saturday, October 10th for our conference tournament. Play begins at 9:00 am in Chetek. JV and Cteam will host a Quad at Spooner High School and Middle School on Tuesday, October 13th. Play begins at 5:30 pm. This will be their final matches of the season. Varsity will again take the court on Thursday, October 15th for their Conference Quad. Play will begin at Spooner High School at 5:45 pm. We’d also like to note that our middle school teams will take play in their last matches at St. Joesph’s in Rice Lake on Thursday, October 15th. We have enjoyed watching them grow through this season.

Bloomer's Pink Night

On Thursday we played at Bloomer. We knew that Bloomer would be a tough opponent, but went into the games knowing that we had worked on many of the skills we needed to. Our C-team made great improvements from playing Bloomer in the Quad on Tuesday. While they still lost their match, we were very proud of how they played. Scores for Cteam were 13-25, 16-25, and 6-25. JV came out a little quiet and couldn't quite gain back the excitement. They lost their match 10-25-, 2-25, and 4-25. We will make some more adjustments this week and get ready for Hayward on Tuesday in Cteam and JV's last regular season game. JV and Cteam will host a Quad on October 13th in Spooner also.

Varsity was pumped up heading in to the game and ready to play in Bloomer's pink night. During the week we collaborated with Bloomer and decided to both wear our pink jerseys and pink socks in support of a cure for breast cancer. We had made some changes to our rotation and even with our excitement we still could not quite play our best games. Varsity lost the match We will continue to work on some key skills in the next week. Scores were 6-25, 11-25 and 7-25. We host our pink night on Tuesday against Hayward and invite all to wear pink in support of the cure for breast cancer. We will head to Chetek on Saturday, October 10th for the Conference Tournament. We hope all will come out for this important HON tournament. We play the second part of the conference tournament on Thursday, October 15th at Spooner.

9/24/2015 against Barron

On Thursday, September 24th we hosted Barron. It was a tough night with tough losses. Our girls are working hard, but will continue to work on refining our skills.

C-team scores: 16-25, 11-25, 9-15

JV scores: 10-25, 17-25, 13-25

It was our Jr. Passer night and we were excited to celebrate them. It is important that our high school girls give back to the younger program. Jr. Passers have had one practice on Monday, September 21st and will have another on Monday, September 28th with high school players and coaches.

In game one we were simply working on our defense and learning where we needed to be in order to pick up hits. We started behind but continued to fight back. We ended up losing game one, 8-25. In game two we knew we would need to take our game to the next level and put even more onto the court. We made a few adjustments and made some improvements. We rallied for every point, but ended up losing 17-25. In game 3 Kayla Boutwell stepped out of setter into right side hitter and Hannah Kastner stepped in to set. Both did a great job working with each other. Meagan VanderHeyden moved from middle hitter to outside hitter and continues to show passion for the sport from any position. Emmie Bassett gave us many great swings and hits. We ended up losing game three, 10-25 As a young team we still have skills to improve on and we will focus on those in the next week.

Soccer will also host their pink night on October 6th. Football will host their pink night on October 9th. A portion of their ticket sales will go to our cancer scholarship fund also.

On Tuesday, October 13th JV and C-team will host a Quad at Spooner. Varsity's regular season play will end on Thursday, October 15th at our home Conference Quad. Game play begins at 5:30 pm.

@ Ladysmith

On Tuesday, September 22nd our teams headed to Ladysmith. It was a hard night where our teams couldn't quite find the right groove with serving or serve receive. It is always hard to lose, but we know that even in loss we learn great lessons.

C-team scores: 25-22, 23-25, 18-25

JV scores: 19-25, 9-25, 9-25

At the varsity level Taylor Shutt stepped in to make 40 passes in the match. Kayla Boutwell was our leading server. Carson Johannes, Emmie Bassett, Jenna Curtis, and Meagan VanderHeyden all led us with hits. Kayla Boutwell gave us 29 sets as our setter in game 1 and 2 and Hannah Kastner gave us 20 in game 3. We will continue to work hard as a team and make improvements.

Varsity scores: 7-25, 9-25, 9-25

Cumberland - September 15th

On Tuesday we had a huge win over Cumberland. Since we had beat Cumberland earlier in the season we knew that winning was within our reach, but we knew that we would need to work hard to attain that goal. We started off a little cold and lost game one 14-25. In game two we came out strong though and took an early lead of 8-1. We kept that momentum going to win 25-17. By game three we were tired and playing in a warm gym. We started out quiet and rallied back, but couldn't quite catch completely up. We lost game three 19-25. In game four we played tough. It was back and forth the entire game. As coaches we were very impressed with how our players communicated, worked together, and completed each pass, set, and hit. We won this game 25-23. This was our first time playing all five matches and we were very tired. A few players really stepped up just when we needed them. That is huge in volleyball when you greatly depend on the other players on and off the court. We really came together and won the final game 15-13 to win the match. Our girls jumped off the bench with excitement. It was a very proud moment as a coach. Meagan VanderHeyden and Danika McCumber led us in serves for the match with 50 serves and only 6 errors combined. Jenna Curtis and Danika McCumber led us in hits with 13 kills combined.

Our JV and C-team had some rough moments with serving, but also played tough games. JV lost their match in two tough games 23-25 and 14-25. C-team also lost their match in some very close games, 24-26 and 21-25. We will continue to work on perfecting our skills and working as a team unit.

Coming off a win, we felt we were ready to compete against Northwestern. We started slow, falling behind 3-8 in game one. Hannah Kastner started as our setter and did a phenomenal job. We rallied and battled but couldn’t quick catch up. We ended up losing game one 18-25. We made a few adjustments, but couldn’t find our routine, losing game two 8-25. In game three Hannah Kastner, Topanga Peterson, and Kayla Boutwell stepped back in as leaders on the court. As a team we couldn’t get as many hits in as we needed and our passes were just a little off. We ended up losing game three in a tough game, 16-25. Carson Johannes led us in match serves with 11 and no errors. Meagan VanderHeyden led us in hits with 13 attempts for the match.

JV played hard, but lost their match 19-25, 11-25, and 24-26. Cteam also battled to win their match 7-25, 26-24, and 15-8. Congratulations C-team!

It was Parent’s night. We would like to say a HUGE thank you to our parents who support us all season long. You are our biggest fans. Thank you!

Jr. Passers Has Started

Jr. Passers started on September 14th. We worked on passing, setting, and much more! They will join the HS teams again on September 28th as well as being honored at our September 24th game between the JV and Varsity matches.

Team Meals

For 3 weeks in September we share a Varsity, JV, and Cteam hosted team meal. This is a great time to laugh, talk, and just spend some relaxing time together!

Ashland Tournament

From the Spooner Advocate:

Ashland tournament

On Saturday Spooner traveled to Ashland for a tournament. Five varsity players were gone. Spooner coaches asked JV players to step up and they did.

“We were extremely proud of the nine players that were there,” said Coach Smith. “Taylor Shutt did an excellent job passing and digging all day. Meagan VanderHeyden was big on the net and will continue to be a leader as our only senior. Mariah Skogstad, a starting JV middle, did a phenomenal job blocking and hitting for us.

“Many teams had hard hitters, and this was greatly needed. Emmie Bassett stepped into a new middle rotation. Carson Johannes is one of our left side hitters and was able to get her hand on many of the hard hits that came our way. Aspen Mullikin stepped up as a middle server, with a very hard swing. Hannah Kastner filled a much-needed position when our starting setter, Kayla Boutwell, was moved to right side hitter. Emily Peoples helped out at left side hitter.

“While we did not win a match all day, I can say I was very impressed with how well our girls talked, transitioned, and worked together as a team with not ever stepping onto the court as a team before Saturday.”

Spooner results

“Match one was very difficult after an early start to the day,” said Coach Smith. “We lost 5-25 and 11-25 to Washburn. In match two we played Northland Pines. They were a tough team with some hard hitters. We rallied together though in game one and won 25-23. It was a huge win for our team. We played hard and played together. We lost our footing in game two to lose 6-25. Even though we played hard in game three, we fell 9-15. Beating Northland Pines in game one was a great success for us, because we were the underdog.

“We had a long break before match three, which hurt us. We came out pretty quiet, and although we worked hard we lost this match 9-25 and 11-25.

“Although we lost all three matches, I would say that our team learned a lot about working together, communication, serving, and defense. We will take these lessons and work on them in practice.”

You can find pictures of our tournament by clicking here. Pictures taken by Brady Johannes.

Chetek - September 10th

Printed in the Spooner Advocate:

“On Thursday we hosted Chetek,” said Coach Melissa Smith. “Our JV and C-team did a great job playing right with Chetek. The JV lost their match, 12-25, 18-25, but won the extra game 17-15. Our C-team lost their match but in very close games, 24-26 and 20-25. I am impressed at how the girls work each week and keep on improving.

“Varsity went into our match with Chetek knowing that we would need to work hard. One of our starters was out, and we pulled our starting setter to right hitter and pulled up a JV setter, Lauren Johnson. She did a great job working with the varsity team. We couldn’t quite get our routine down and ended up losing the match, 11-25, 13-25, and 11-25. As a young team we will continue to work on refining our skills and working as a team.”

Amery Match - September 2nd, 2015

Writing about a loss is always hard. Here's my best shot at it:

On Tuesday Spooner Volleyball hosted Amery. Our JV started off slow losing game one 7-25. They picked it up in game two, but lost game two 19-25 to lose the match. We will continue to work on refining skills in the next week. Our C-team battled both games but lost 15-25 and 23-25. We have 16 girls on C-team which is very promising, but also very challenging as a coach. Varsity took the court at 7:00. We couldn’t get our game going and made many serve receive and hitting errors. Amery took the lead 0-12. Battling back from that behind is very hard. We ended up losing game one 3-25. We talked in between games and the girls knew we needed to play differently if we were going to turn our game around. We battled back and forth with Amery until mid-game when Amery took the lead 11-18. We ended up losing game two 13-25. We made adjustments in game three putting in Carson Johannes and Meagan VanderHeyden, our only senior, in the game. We rallied this game and had the lead multiple times. Taylor Shutt did a wonderful job passing for us as our libero. We missed some tough tips and made a few hitting errors, but ended up strong only losing 21-25. We have a week of practices ahead of us before we play Chetek on September 10th at home. Varsity also plays at the Ashland Invite on Saturday, September 12th. On September 15th all three teams play at Cumberland. Keep following along at www.sasdvolleyball.blogspot.com or on Twitter @SpoonerHSVB Our young team is going to work hard and give you some surprises.

Spooner Invitational

On Saturday, August 29th our Varsity hosted the Spooner Invitational. We decided early in the week to donate all money from concessions and tickets to Marshall Hutton, the young boy involved in the bus accident.

Front row, left to right: Danika, Taylor, Carson, Emmie
Back row, left to right: Dani, Kayla, Jenna, Monica, Meagan, Mariah, Hannah, Emily, Topanga, Lauren, Coach Melissa Smith

We were excited to take the court and show what we had learned as team this week. Our first match was against Cumberland. This was a non-conference match, but we were very excited because we will play Cumberland during conference play later in the season. For the match we had 47 serves and only 4 errors. Kayla Boutwell was our strongest server this game with 15 attempts and 7 aces. Monica Plesums followed with 12 attempts and 3 aces. Monica Plesums and Jenna Curtis were our strong hitters with 7 kills together. Taylor Shutt and Danika McCumber were tough passers this match also. We lost the first game 10-25, but came out hard in game two to win 25-13. In a battle for the third game, we came out winning 15-13 to win the match. The smiles on our faces radiated into the crowd. This first win felt amazing. We definitely needed it as a team.

Next up we played Shell Lake. We couldn't seem to find our groove in the first game and took a hard loss 12-25. Our starting setter got hit in the eye and was out for game two. Hannah Kastner, a freshman stepped up and took the court. She did a phenomenal job filling in. Jenna Curtis, our right hitter, stepped up as a captain too. The team did a great job working together, but still couldn't seem to quite keep up with Shell Lake's hits. We ended up losing game two 12-25 and lost the match to Shell Lake.

Our third match was against Northwood. Coming off a match loss is always hard and it takes getting rid of frustration to shake that off. We tried to battle back in game one but lost 17-25. We got motivated and did a great job placing our passes, serves, and digs. Taylor Shutt, our libero, did an amazing job passing. Jenna Curtis killed 6 out of her 7 hits. Carson Johannes, Jenna Curtis, and Kayla Boutwell did an amazing job serving. We ended up winning game two 25-18. We knew we'd need to come out strong in game three since it was only to 15. Emmie Bassett and Topanga Peterson were hustlers on the court, while Monica Plesums was tough at the net. We won 15-9 to win the match.

Our fourth and final match of the day is always a challenging one. We were tired from the day and knew we would need to rally to win. Unfortunately Frederic came out with a stronger team and although we battled, we couldn't catch up. Frederic won both games, 25-11 and 25-12.

Frederic took 1st place, Shell Lake 2nd, Spooner 3rd, Cumberland 4th, and Northwood 5th. We have things to work on and will take Monday to do just that. Preliminary count shows $992 being raised for Marshall Hutton. Thank you to everyone that came out in support. Also, thank you to our 7th - JV players and parents who donated their time working in the concessions stand and as line judges. We couldn't have made this invite possible without you.

We play our first regular season match at home on Tuesday, September 1st at Spooner High School. C-team and JV will take the court at 5:45 and Varsity at 7:00. We hope everyone will come on out to cheer us on. A lot of great things are happening with Spooner Volleyball this year.

You can find pictures from the Spooner Invite, by clicking here. Pictures were taken by Opal Warren and Morgan Taylor.

Webster Scrimmage

On Thursday, August 27th we decided to take the court following the tragic bus accident. We debriefed as a team and decided that we were ready to take the court. While the family involved will forever be in our hearts, we knew that we needed and wanted to move forward as a team. We again want to thank so many people for their support and prayers during this time.

Webster JV and Varsity came to Spooner. On both courts we learned a lot about playing together and working as team. We have some room to grow because we are such a young team. In the week to come we will focus more on coverage and transitions. Overall our serving was very good. Scrimmages are a great time to really focus on growth.

You can view pictures from our Webster scrimmage by clicking here. The pictures were taken by Audi Blonk, our manager.

Amery Scrimmage

On Saturday, August 22nd we scrimmaged at Amery. We started by playing Amery. Next we played Plum City, and played our final match against Glenwood City. Overall we did a great job, being our first time on the court as a team. I think we competed right along with each team. We are a young team with only one senior, and only two returning varsity. Our young players have worked hard all summer and have filled in the gaps very well. Kayla Boutwell and Taylor Shutt will begin the season as our captains. We are also looking to Jenna Curtis and Meagan VanderHeyden to be leaders on the team. Our theme this year is "Work hard, play hard." We will continue to work on perfecting our skills and focus on playing team defense and offense.

You can see pictures of Amery scrimmage taken by our videographer, Dani DeWitt by clicking here.

Team Bonding

On Friday, August 21st we had a team bonding meal at Coach Smith's house. Players brought food to share. We playing outdoor volleyball and jumped in the lake for a short time. (The water was really cold) It was a great time to share, laugh, and get to know our teammates.

The Varsity team will not practice tomorrow, but will instead meet together. We will be available to meet with any Varsity parents after 5:30 that would like to, in order to better help their daughter in the healing process. Thank you.

From the Spooner Area School District:
"Spooner high school student volleyball athletes were traveling along Highway 63 and became involved in an accident with another vehicle. After medical reviews, all athletes, coaches and the bus driver have been released. While the fatalities being reported did not involve those traveling on the bus, the Spooner Area School District wishes to offer support and caring thoughts to all those involved.
